31/5

Another nice winner in Dark Arts for Mr Smullen, and Funatfuntasia a neck 2nd at 11/2 - gutted!
Silky steps a non runner

Angel of the North placed - Equity release unplaced - good for the lay - Classic HArry placed at 12/1

A couple unplaced each way bets. The Czech bet ,in hindsight was a huge price - 4/7 and they beat the tiring and unmotivated Scots with ease. The Swiss 3-0 up allowed for trading of over 3.5 goals

A difficult day today and a temptation to sit on yesterday's excellent profits

Soft ground at Goodwood throws a spanner in the works.
335 GOODWOOD
BETTING FORECAST: 7/4 Bankable, 5/1 Ordnance Row, 11/2 Laa Rayb, 13/2 Caldra, 15/2 Lady Gloria, 10/1 Babodana, Final Verse, 11/1 Vanderlin, 25/1 Whitcombe Minister .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: Though BANKABLE has plenty to do strictly from a ratings point of view there are strong grounds for thinking he can find the required improvement. He was said to have been in need of the run when winning on his reappearance last month and Luca Cumani has passed up the chance to take easier pickings in the handicap on this card later on. He can make it four wins from five starts en route to a tilt at next month's Hunt Cup at Ascot, with Ordnance Row best of the rest

Bankable looks layable to me - soft ground enters the equation and is a multiple winner
As long as the price remains near evens
It's a wierd day - a lot of potentially good short priced favourites but appearing in maidens, smart handicaps and high class races

I'm not going to be drawn into selections today - it looks a day for following the live market and taking cues from there - a day of surprises in store no doubt for me on Bookies benefit Saturday.

FOOTY

More friendlies to lull in the punter - YIKES!
Spain play Peru, France host Paraguay, Portugal play Georgia, Germany play Serbia

France will be interesting following their inability to score in the first half, yet still win. One to follow in running and get on at enhanced prices in running if scoreless for a concerted period.

Portugal are 3.5 for any unquoted score - eg any score above 3-3 or one team scoring 4 goals. 1/8 does signify goals. 4.4 for over 4.5 goals is ambitious and hopefully tradeable.

The Germans capitulated last time 2-0 up - wholesale friendly game changes - 2-2 full time.
I suppose over 2.5 goals is worth backing -keep the bet neutral. Hopefully goals will come in the first half

1-1 final score was covered in the dutch but the ,erm, Dutch couldn't win both halves. Some of the systems trialled had a good day yesterday, especially the Racing Unlocked backing system, but from my perspective there were too many small fields and shorties who had something against them, despite NOT being lays
Soft ground at Brighton today adds a new dimension
825 DOWNROYAL - Dark Arts has Smullen on board and is priced as an outsider but worthy of each way support
855- Fanfuntasia as above
335 GOODWOOD
BETTING FORECAST: 10/11 Master Of Arts, 9/2 Star Pattern, 6/1 Longevity, 7/1 Silky Steps, 20/1 Benedetto, Kashmina, Presto Levanter, 25/1 Celtic Charlie, Stand In Flames, 33/1 Bainisteoir, Cosmea, Oriental Girl, Rettorical Lad, 66/1 Too Grand, 100/1 Estella Mai ,

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: MASTER OF ARTS (nap) did the business in the expected style at Chepstow on Monday and despite this very different track and double penalty he looks the logical answer. Silky Steps is an interesting alternative over a trip which should suit though she needs to get going earlier than she did at Windso

Some clues in Spotlight to take the horse on? Looks like 3 main rivals and I'll go with the biggest priced in Silky Steps each way

750 MUSS
BETTING FORECAST: 13/8 Funfair Wane, 2/1 Glenluji, 3/1 Angelofthenorth, 12/1 Princess Charlmane, 14/1 La Guancha, 25/1 Notforloveormoney, 50/1 Howards Prince, 66/1 Alfie Lee, Mister Marmaduke .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: Angelofthenorth wouldn't be certain to build on her C&D success and FUNFAIR WANE, who has strong claims on the ratings, is well worth a chance to reverse that form, especially if the ground eases. Glenluji should be monitored for market confidence and looks a lively danger if fitness isn't a problem on his comeback

3 horse race? Angel of the north to place?

630 TOWC
Equity release I will lay as long as the price is not too inflated -looks to have enough rivals and Towcester's big hill might find him out

700
BETTING FORECAST: 5/4 Cooldine Boy, 9/4 Alfred´s Tower, 7/2 Kilcrea Asla, 10/1 The Stickler, 16/1 Classic Harry, 25/1 Gappersonneldotcom, 33/1 Lansdowne Princess, 66/1 Katy´s Classic, Lutin Collonges, 100/1 Celtic Society, One More Native .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: The Nicholls factor heightens interest in Alfred's Tower but this looks good for COOLDINE BOY (nap), who seemed to get his career back on track here last time

Chance on The Stickler and Classic Harry each way. Looks to involve the 3 main protagonists but you never know with that hill that one, or 2, might not cope and empty out

435 YORK
BETTING FORECAST: 13/8 Reve De Soleil, 6/1 Cutting Comments, Whatyouwoodwishfor, 7/1 The Kilkenny Kat, 8/1 Mill Pond, 16/1 Herring Senior, Nassau Beach, 20/1 Chicago Cop, Keeptheboatafloat, Richo, 25/1 Premier Krug, 50/1 Look For Value, Luckette .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: The Kilkenny Kat and Mill Pond are worth noting in the betting but REVE DE SOLEIL sets a decent standard on his fourth at the Dante meeting here and, with improvement in the offing, should prove hard to bea

Why is Herring Senior currently 10/1 and Richo 14/1 - potential 16/1 system bets? If reflected nearer the off then each way in a maiden where the market is key

FOOTY
Couple of friendlies and no more halftime/fulltimes with these friendlies. The Czech republic have been good in recent games and face a Scottish side bereft of motivation with many stars missing perhaps given the long season? 4/7 is reasonable to back the Czechs and hope they score first to allow for trading.

1/20 Switzerland - again the price usually signifies goals. Over 3.5 goals will certainly enhance the measly match odds - those who like more speculation may consider greater odds on over 4.5 goals - ideally to trade and ideally the game will be in running

Corryborough hardened to 1/2 and won -hardly a life changing price !Lady Bernie placed
Not an ideal day for the Irish Combos - as you've seen when they have good days they have excellent days. I did miss one Jonny Murtagh winner in the Kalinka Malinka race - my own fault - Young Jemmy - I guess I'm so used to seeing O'Brien/Murtagh in partnership that this one was overlooked.
The 800 saw the 2 selections come 2nd and 3rd at 8/1 and 12/1 - great runs. Giant among Men came 3rd. Bigger prices than usual for the Irish combos yesterday
England match pretty mch spot on yesterday apart from the bookings although I don't know how they add up the points, and I dout many would have been interested in the 1.4.
Pity I didn't read the Hollywood script. John Terry returning after the heartbreak of the Champions League with a goal at Wem-ber-ley!
Small fields at Ayr make life difficult

A blank day for me today - lots of potential shorties but all have questionmarks against them

FOOTY
Holland should despatch Denmark tonight hafving shown there's goals in em.

Five satins unplaced. Teach Nua was a strange one and at 2/5 unbackable, dropping from 2 miles to 1 mile and LOSING. Stylish Bid won at 7/1. Over 3.5 goals came in but with a 2-2 draw!
805 BEVERLEY
BETTING FORECAST: 4/5 Corrybrough, 4/1 Inxile, 6/1 Dubai Princess, Hammadi, 20/1 Mey Blossom, 25/1 Secret Asset, 100/1 Prigsnov Dancer .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: These are quicker conditions than the exciting CORRYBROUGH has encountered before but an uphill track like this is a definite help in that regard and he will be hard to beat. Inxile will be suited by this drop back to the minimum trip and looks the main threat.

Potential price gapper - "hard to beat" - Inxile is the problem horse - worth backing at this stage but given the time of the race, a quick peak at the market is recommended

220 CARTMEL
BETTING FORECAST: 8/11 Trinity Rose, 5/2 Lady Bernie, 9/1 Adlestrop, 12/1 Edkay, 20/1 Cashback Rose, 25/1 Sheriff´s Falcon, 50/1 Double Runner, Ran A Gamble, She´s So Lucky, 100/1 Gala Queen .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: TRINITY ROSE would have won a similar contest last time but for falling at the final hurdle and can gain compensation if that incident hasn't left a mark. Lady Bernie is the only realistic alternative

Lady Bernie to place here? Potential question mark over the market leader

LEOPARDSTOWN
600
BETTING FORECAST: 2/1 Kitchi, 11/4 Look Officer, 4/1 Rantavan Wood, 5/1 Roshina, 8/1 Moving Statue, 10/1 Call The Law, 12/1 Chibcha, Rosie The Riveter, 14/1 Cape West.

Moving statue has Smullen on board after his 7/1 winner yesterday.
630 - Egypt and Luminous eyes - not backable each way ( this is preferable) - MAY BE BACKABLE AS A DUTCH?

700 - Kalinka Malinka a head 4th so no payout for each way backers last time - what chance this time?
730 - Mutakarrim
800 -Ghimaar and Divinitus has Jonny Murtagh on board at a big price - he chipped in with a 10/1 winner a couple of days ago for a trainer other than Ballydoyle
900 - Giant Among Men - again may not be backable each way

I am aware that these Irish Combos will have blank days - yesterday for instance was profitable with the 7/1 SP winner (bigger on BEtfair)

FOOTY
As we saw yesterday, friendlies can be a minefield. Wholesale changes in yesterday's 2nd half Germany game meant that they won the first half with their strongest side but lost the 2nd half. Over 3.5 goals came in in an unconventional way but was welcome.
Any eagle eyed trader would have seen France at evens ( originally 1/3) after a 0-0. They duly won in the 2nd half for another successful enhanced odds bet.
Watch out for these!
Eng-er-land face the USA this evening in another meaningless friendly and I won't be entertaining at 4/9. THe USA should not be underestimated. England are unbackable, but I don't know if they are layable at 4/9. The problem is that if the USA don't score ( and England don't score) the price will not move sufficiently quickly over time to allow for a decent profit.
Perhaps an under 2.5 goal trade given England's inability to instil confidence in their supporters and the possible Capello-esque negative football?
Draw/England may appeal and is backalbe along with England/England -break even preferable on the latter .
1.4 for under 5 points appeals in the booking market given this is a friendly but the odds are not punter friendly
0-0 and 1-0 are dutchable for half time score

Not a game to get carried away with though

27/5

Quiet day yesterday - only one place for the Irish Combos, and it was good to get Motaffared beaten, but Hula Ballew, despite being fancied, could only place. Perhaps a lay of Motafarred would have been wiser.
the unders sequence in playoffs ended yesterday!

26/5

A decent enough haul yesterday for the Irish Combos. The 2 selected for the 1000 guineas came up trumps on a day where alas a few Aiden O'brien runners were short priced

Carrying on with the Irish Combos, 630 BAllinrobe sees Akinola

325 CARLISLE

BETTING FORECAST: 11/8 Motafarred, 11/2 Hula Ballew, 7/1 Grand Opera, 8/1 Musca, 10/1 Regent´s Secret, 12/1 Champain Sands, Kabis Amigos, 16/1 Stoic Leader, Sunnyside Tom, 20/1 Dakota Rain .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: Despite Motafarred's seemingly obvious chance under a penalty, he very much had the run of things at Pontefract. It could be worth taking him on with GRAND OPERA, who is worth another chance to confirm his reappearance promise. Hula Ballew and Musca are viable alternatives.

Fav looks obvious but out to 9/4 could signify he may be worth taking on. Hula Ballew is now 4/1 and backable each way

Is Stockport v Rochdale another playoff? If so, again unders may be the call IF it's held at WEmbly

No luck with the Noel Fehily double.

Caraman 2nd. Irish boys did well with a 1-2 in the first, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd from 4 each way bets in the 310 - it was Astronomer Royal who won at 8/1. Henry won again. Settigano a short head 4th - frustrating for each way backers, Cheyenne Star 3rd, no luck in the last.

unneffer won the toss of a coin race.

The lay on Oumeyade came good as he found one too good - again at a nice small price

Play offs = under 2.5 goals as Hull City won 1-0. The Rangers lay was interesting. Before the first goal the price had increased to 1.60 allowing a bit of trading. The goals came, then parity was restored at 2-2 ntil a win at 3-2. Low liability and an ability to trade out at 2-2 if you wanted .

I must admit I followed the Racing Post with their bullish write up re the Ireland match bt it was another disappointment.

Pomme Tiepy, the wholehearted Willie Mullins mare may be worth support at Auiteuil today although v soft ground and 3 miles 5 is a long way for any horse to carry my beans.

CURRAGH

A nice haul yesterday and there was a Jonny Murtagh winner too for another trainer.

200 - big field , not really a betting medium but Cihangir is the Weld/Smullen horse and Murtagh's on Nortburn

230 - Daggers Bond has Smullen on board, while Ballydoyle has Westphalia and Navajo. A couple are each way

300 - Duke of MArmalade back to win and Red Rock Canyon each way

335 - Irish 1000 guineas - Aiden O Brien has Halfway to heaven, Kitty MAtcham, Mystical Lady, Savethisdanceforme, Soinlovewithyou.

Weld has Caribbean Sunset, and MAdaboutyou.

All bar one is each way backable. Not economical though unless a better than 7/1 horse wins. Perhaps Kitty and Halfway EACH WAY for me. Now watch as the 125/1 horse wins by a neck!

410 - Vincenzio Galilei has Murtagh on board.

440 - Hebridean, Minneapolis and Central Station each way

510 - Ransomed Bride each way

540 - Love to dance, Tiffany Diamond and Matters at Hand

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: Court Of Appeal should go well once more but he is getting on a bit and wasn't at his best last time. Most of these are exposed with the exception of FUNKY TOWN and given that the Tuer team are in good order, and he showed promise in bumpers, it may be worth chancing him here in a race unlikely to live in the memory for long.

Bit of a puzzle here - Jonny Murtagh ( the Ballydoyle number one) is on Myboycharlie - is that a hint in itslef given there are 3 Aiden O'brien horses in Astronomer Royal, Abraham Lincoln and Great Rumpuscat. All 3 are at biggish each way prices

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: NEW APPROACH is given marginal preference in this replay of the Newmarket equivalent with Henrythenavigator. It is possible that he was prepared for his first Classic assignment with a prolonged campaign in mind, and may have a little more potential for improvement than a rival who looked very well tuned for the day.

Henry is the obvious Aiden O'Brien horse, but he has Jupiter Pluvius and Windsor Palace, and Smullen has Famous name.
Looks to concern New Approach and Henry here for sure.

420 - Settigano for Smullen
450 - Cheyenne star for Smullen
520 - King of Westphalia and Tango Foxtrot each way

Multiple selections in single races make betting uneconomical especially where New Approach and Henry the navigator look to have the first 2 places filled. We won't get a return for a placed horse which covers stake if we take the above 2 named as 1-2 in the guineas.

BETTING FORECAST: Evs Unnefer, 3/1 Pampas Cat, 13/2 Gaspar Van Wittel, 7/1 Age Of Reason, 8/1 Drill Sergeant .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: This race has produced top-ranking winners in David Junior, Red Rocks and Lucarno in the last three years. UNNEFER (nap) may not be up to that but he sets a good standard in the context of this line-up. It is interesting to see that Mark Johnston is risking a handicap mark of 93 with Age Of Reason, who should not be dismissed despite graduating from the AW and looking the stable second choice on jockey bookings.

Toss of the coin race? I'll chance Unnefer

Well I was right about Caustic Wit but changed my mind! in future if a shortie in the betting forecast is left alone by a near market rival becoming withdrawn then it may be worth backing.
one way ticket - so close to a nice 12/1 win - managed 2nd place
Maid for Music - 12/1 betting forecast into 2/1 - fancied? - I'd say so but could only manage 2nd place
Kissing the camera won by a neck - more frustrations! Palace Moon a non runner. Oumeyade a shocking price but Ruby did NOT take the wrong course!
Again with the irish, started well with a 1-2 for Grand Ducal and Chariya .Award Ceremonty placed for each way backers. Woodland Beauty placed at 3/1.
CARTMEL - Can noel Fehily top the card here with wins in the first and last? Red Admiral and Stellenbosch. A hint that they're both better backed for theplace. We all know about shorties in maiden hurdles. As a double ,at least we'll get a single bet at 3.11 / 1

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: The betting should provide some useful pointers about the newcomers and Kissing The Camera and Redhead, in particular, are a pair to note, but MISDAQEYA comes from a race which has worked out well and should have derived considerable benefit from the experience

misdaqeya and Redhead to level stakes - Kissing is out to 4/1 at the moment and these 2 have been clipped in a tad. At time of writing, no market moves amongst the others BUT that's not to say they won't occur nearer the off, as this is a predominantly debutant field

I did mention the draw/Celtic half time full time but stupidly ignored it!

Hart of Gold is ot so yo would assume CAustic Wit has a better chance with the nrearest rival a non runner. But why then is the price 4/1 early doors. This is indicative to me that Caustic Wit is not fancied?

BETTING FORECAST: 7/4 Undaunted Affair, 7/2 Dubai´s Gazal, 6/1 Desert Sunset, 7/1 Haven´t A Clue, 8/1 Rosabee, 9/1 Honimiere, 12/1 Maid For Music, 33/1 Wigan Pier, 66/1 Avonlini .

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: The betting should give an idea of the threat represented by the newcomers, among whom Dubai's Gazal makes particular appeal, but UNDAUNTED AFFAIR sets a decent standard and has experience on her sid

Maid for music and Wigan Pier, show at 15/2 and 20/1 - BUT the race goes off at 650pm. Potential market moves? Wigan pier if showing at 20/1 at the off withh be the each way selection in case it's a market mover

BETTING FORECAST: 9/4 Kissing The Camera, 11/4 Misdaqeya, 4/1 Redhead, 11/2 Daheeya, 10/1 Moonburst, 16/1 Halaak, 20/1 Refuse To Decline, 33/1 Mistress Mary, 40/1 Tamarah .

TIPPERARY
525 - a case of nearly there with the Weld , Smullen, O'Brien horses this week. They have been consistent but a couple of cases of short head 2nd's at nice prices have proved frustrating
This race sees Grand Ducal and Chariya.
555 - Observation Post and Award ceremony
655 - Jonny Murtagh, the O'Brien number 1 is on Seen and HEard in a wide open race
Pat Smullen is on aftershock - both each way prices in a race which I would usually dismiss, but let's hope for a surprise.
